
WORLD PRESS EXHIBITION IN HARARE

HARARE : The xenophobic attacks are a major highlight in the 2009 World Press Photo exhibition which has opened in Harare with a significant number of Zimbabwean deaths and injuries by South Africans according to the World Press Photo which has opened the exhibition at the National Art Gallery.
The World Press Photo is an independent non-profit organisation , founded in the Netherlands in 1955.Its aim is to internationally support and promote the work of professional press photographers.It is working in collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Harare to conduct the exhibition.
World Press Photo says in a statement presented at the official opening of the world photojournalism exhibition that the xenophobic attacks took place at a time when Zimbabwe was experiencing spiraling hyperinflation and official figures of Zimbabweans who crossed over to South Africa was pegged at 96 000 per month,not taking illegal immigrants into account.
The annual World Press Photo exhibition is the best known of World Press Photo”s activities and every year, the winning photos go on exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.The show opens on 18 February running to 5 March 2010.
The show attracts a broader public and because of the wide-ranging focus of the contest forms an eyewitness record of world events of the previous year, according to World Press Photo.
Other featured images include the earthquake that hit China measuring 7.9 on the Ritchter scale last year and was recorded to be the worst since 1976.
World Press Photo also says that it has been observed from the pictures that war,hunger and death do not remain a problem only faced by Africa but have stretched out to the rest of the world.
