Crosstown Vancouver retiree Susan Peake will walk in the 10K Vancouver Sun Run April 22nd to raise funds for a stock of “loaner” scientific calculators for Kenyan secondary school students who receive support from KEEF, a B.C.-based educational charity (www.kenyaeducation.org). “High school is not free in Kenya” Susan reports “and required items, such as scientific calculators are beyond the reach of many of our students. If we can have a stock of these specialized calculators in our small office in Kenya, it will help KEEF students improve their marks and move forward toward employment.”
“Many of the very poor, bright students assisted by KEEF donors are from rural areas where families living on tiny farms may earn less than $3.00 a day. With a scientific calculator costing a little over $20 in Kenya, it becomes an “extra” that is unaffordable.”
KEEF (Kenya Education Endowment Fund) provides scholarship funds for both secondary and post-secondary students from the Kakamega region of western Kenya. Currently, some 95 secondary students have KEEF scholarships. Individuals, families, groups and organizations sponsor a student at $50 a month or $600 a year. Other donors of gifts – of any amount -make it possible for KEEF to cover such items as emergency medical/dental needs and exam fees, or to “top-up” what a family can provide toward tuition for a student. Tax-deductible receipts are available for all donations, on request.
Will you support this effort to offer loan scientific calculators to KEEF students? For more information about KEEF’s work in Kenya, or to pledge a donation for Susan in the Vancouver Sun Run 2018, contact Shelagh at shelaghag@shaw.ca, 604-415-9397. Thank you!
