The City of Vancouver was incorporated on April 6, 1886. On April 6, 2011, Vancouver will come together to celebrate 125 years of history with a fun-filled, family-friendly event that honours our citys diversity, First Nations’ heritage and current designation as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2011. Birthday Live will begin late afternoon and continue through the evening with live music and entertainment, innovative art displays, childrens activities and more. Mayor Gregor Robertson, First Nations leaders and other dignitaries will be on hand for official ceremonies including lighting the cauldron and cutting a BIG birthday cake!

We all witnessed the recent earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand, Haiti and Chile and have seen first hand the devastation caused by these earthquakes. Living in Vancouver, we too could be faced with an earthquake, yet few of us take the steps to ensure we are prepared. This session covers what is required to develop your family emergency plan, how to conduct a Home Hazard Hunt, and what to do when an earthquake strikes. Cost: Free

The Road to Earth Day: The History of the Environmental Movement in BC

Part of Super Natural British Columbia, Vancouverites inhabit a dense temperate rainforest transformed into a modern cosmopolitan city. Earth Day celebrates annually the challenges of environmental issues in places like ours, where microchips and wood chips co-exist. UBC environmental historian, Philip Van Huizen, and historical geographer and B.C. Sierra club and Greenpeace founder, Dr. Terry Simmons, discuss what we can learn from scholarly and personal stories of the environmental movement in the rainforest and beyond. (Admission is free. Easter Eggstravaganza (up to 10yrs) Rain or Shine! There will be face painting, crafts and our famous Egg Hunt. Children less than 6yr. must be accompanied by an adult. Limited number of tickets available, $5/child. 1:00pm up to 5yrs; 1:30pm 6-10 yrs; 2:00pm up to 5yrs; 2:30pm All ages. Select your Egg Hunt time on arrival. Smaller children have a head start.
