The hype of the recently held 2018 LEO AWARDS in Vancouver, a project of the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia that Celebrates Excellence in British Columbia Film and Television since 1999 has waned on the city streets but in the studios and hearts of those who won the awards the buzz still strongly remains.
Congratulations to all the 2018 LEO AWARD Recipients for your extraordinary and exceptional work in the Film and Television Industry.
The Television Movie ‘Christmas Princess’ starring Jaedon Siewert as Supporting Lead Actor was awarded 4 LEO AWARDS winning in the sub categories of Program, Direction, Casting and Lead Performance–Female.
Zoey Siewert was nominated for Best Performance, Music, Comedy or Variety Program or Series for her role in ‘Haters Back Off-Exposing My Imposter’. The LEO AWARD in this category was awarded to another Nominee for their performance in ‘A Telus Original ANDROID Employed’.
An Awards Program is not about winners and losers; Walter Daroshin, President of the LEO AWARDS stated it so well saying that “the LEO AWARDS have brought the industry together for a common purpose – to celebrate artistic achievement and in doing so we create the social fabric that defines us as a community”.
Walter Daroshin is the President of Troika Productions Inc. Currently, he is also Chair of The Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of BC, President of the Leo Awards, a Director of the Hands in Peace Society (Canada) and a Trustee on the Board of the Vancouver Waldorf School.
Daroshin is a seasoned veteran in the Film Industry and been in business for 30 years. As a Writer, Actor, Producer he produced several programs on many platforms; Environmental, Arts, Documentaries, First Nations Matters, Japanese Internment, to name a few. Walter has seen much growth over the years and the many changes in Film and Television technology.
The year 2018 marks a milestone as it’s the 20th Anniversary Program of the LEO AWARDS. Compared to the first year of the LEO AWARDS with 450 entries this year 1225 eligible entries were received. Entries were received in 14 categories comprised of 192 programs and 1033 craft entries.
Eligibility Criteria is the Craft Entrant must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent residence status and have maintained a residence in British Columbia for the 12 months preceding commencement of principal photography of the Program entered for adjudication and filed their most recent tax return in British Columbia. Craft Entrants can only be entered in one (1) Program category.
Daroshin explained the difference between an ACADEMY AWARDS nomination in the USA versus the LEO AWARDS nomination in British Columbia; if a Film is eligible for an Academy Award then every Actor in that film also receives an award whereas at the LEO AWARDS if a film is eligible for an award the Actor must meet the eligibility criteria mentioned in the above paragraph, and that is they must be a resident of British Columbia. Based on the number of entrants received this year the amount of British Columbia based Film and Television Cast Members are on the rise.
British Columbia has a growing and diverse mosaic multicultural community, this has also made an impact in the Film and Television Industry. Our status of being referred to as ‘The Hollywood Of The North’ remains true with the proof of recently celebrating the
20th Anniversary Program – 2018 LEO AWARDS.
