We are wise to acknowledge the hard truths of history and to work for the very values our predecessors, our family members, our fellow citizens fought hard to achieve wherever they came from. The responsibility is now on us to remember and to not take for granted the Canadian values and institutions that support us all.

Lest We Forget There have been people of African descent volunteering to fight for Canada from the earliest times to the present. Often, due to prejudiced views about Black people, they were not allowed to join units with others.

We should keep in mind that the vast majority of those who fought in that war likely did so with honourable intentions.
