Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement marking Black History Month:
“February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on the history of a community whose legacy can be traced back to the origins of our country. Black History Month is also an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of people of African and Caribbean descent who, throughout our history, have distinguished themselves by their commitment to making Canada the culturally diverse, free, prosperous and proud nation it is today.
“Under this year’s theme, “Proud of Our History”, we celebrate the achievements of black Canadians who helped build and define our great country.
“As we prepare this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, we remember and pay tribute to the black Canadians who bravely served our country.
“During Black History Month this year, our Government will also be highlighting the historical importance of two black communities: Africville in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Hogan’s Alley in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada Post is issuing new stamps throughout the month to honour these communities.
“This month, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the important role that black Canadians have played, and continue to play, in building our great country and shaping our national identity, and to participate in the events and activities taking place to mark this important part of our heritage.”
