By michelle-lee : Basketball: Rising Star: DamiAnn Prehay is hoping to obtain a full basketball scholarship from an NCAA Division 1 school in the U.S. He is 15 and entering grade 12 at Bramalea Secondary School in Brampton. He is a C/B student but hopes to raise his grades to B+ to enhance his chances for a scholarship. He is already on the radar – he is ranked #23 in Canada for his age by NPH (North Pole Hoops). He captains Bramalea’s school team and was MVP in the past two years and Athlete of the Year last year. He also plays for CIA Bounce, a Canadian team in the Amateur Athletic Union, which competes in the U.S. Anthony Bennett, Canada’s first #1 pick in the NBA draft also played for CIA Bounce. NPH scout Tariq Sbiet believes Prehay has the potential for a shot at a scholarship (6’5” tall, strong and physically gifted). Prehay’s plan B (if a scholarship is unavailable) is to attend a Canadian school with a high level program where he will study finance or electrical engineering. In the meantime he will continue to work hard on both levels – academic and basketball.
FIBA: Canada’s National Sr. Men’s basketball team had their World Cup qualifying hopes dashed after losing their last three games of the FIBA tournament. Although this year’s team is a young one, it is a talented one with Cory Joseph, Triston Thompson, Andrew Nicholson and Andrew Rautins providing decent offense, but it just wasn’t good enough. Coach Jay Triano blames it on a lack of international experience. Canada finished in 6th place behind Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Venezuela and ahead of Uruguay and Jamaica. International experience probably played a part but using that as the excuse is unacceptable. Some serious thought must be given to the overall program or soon Canadian NBA players will choose not to play – winning is a big part of tournaments after all
NBA: LeBron James will be the executive producer of a TV sitcom “Survivor’s Remorse”. The half-hour show will focus on two people who make it big after leaving Philadelphia’s inner city. James and his long-time business partner Maverick Carter are working with Tom Werner (The Cosby Show) on the project.
Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays: Even though disappointment reigns supreme as the Jays fail to live up to expectations and the post season is nil, fans and the Jays’ executive do have at least one positive. Slugger Edwin Encarnacion (1B), the team’s best and moist consistent hitter is on track to be the first player in team history to hit 40 homeruns with fewer than 70 strikeouts. Across the league his numbers are in a class with the likes of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Bsrry Bonds, Albert Pujols and Willie Mays. He is 3rd b behind Chris Davis and Miguel Cabrera in this year’s top 10 homerun hit
