“When you come to realize that the butterfly never succumbs to anger or the pressure of power, you become a wise observer of nature in its full simplicity.” — Honoré Gbedze
As a young boy in Africa, I would follow my grandfather to the farm early in the morning, trekking through the forest with his hunter’s bag and long rifle. We walked quietly, alert for any signs of wild animals that might pose a danger, while gathering mushrooms, snails, fruits, or anything consumable the forest offered.
In those moments of silence, my grandfather would sometimes speak about the butterfly, describing it as a guide to the ultimate life. Back then, I didn’t fully grasp the meaning of his words. But now, on this November morning of 2024—forty years later—his wisdom resonates with me as I reflect on our world and the landscape of leadership today.
The butterfly is a creature of remarkable power, moving gently through nature yet leaving a profound impact. It guides hunters to the most powerful animals and flutters gracefully across flowers, rubbing its wings softly on fruits in silent motion. It travels across continents without discrimination, adorned with colors that captivate.
Confident in its small size and lightness, the butterfly transcends mountains, valleys, and prairies. It nurtures nature, giving back by pollinating, bringing smiles to those who notice its beauty, and lighting up the hearts of children who see it. It never shows anger or seeks to assert dominance. In its quiet simplicity, the butterfly is both magnificent and powerful.
Imagine, just for a moment, if human society—especially our leaders—could learn from the butterfly. What kind of world would we create?
There is a transformative power in the butterfly’s character of silent strength. Yet today, leadership often seems noisy, disrespectful, and unbalanced, leaving our youth confused and lost. Until we begin to reflect on our actions and learn from simple things, like the butterfly, progress in our society will remain elusive.
So, remember this: Be kind. Be like the butterfly.
