The author delves into the childhood of Precious Ramotswe, who grew up to establish “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency in Botswana.  Her exploits were brought to life on the HBO TV program of the same name.  In “The Great Cake Mystery” we meet Precious as a little schoolgirl where a theft of a piece of cake and the determination to prevent false blame becomes Precious’ first case.  The story is enhanced by the woodcut-style illustrations by Iain McIntosh.  An excellent read for the emerging minds of young readers.
