History was made tonight. Toronto Raptors played their first ever game of the NBA Finals and it was the first time a Finals game was played outside the USA. The reigning champions Golden State Warriors we’re kept in check as the Raptors defeated them 118-109.
Pascal Siakam with 32 points was the Raptors top scorer followed by Kawhi Leonard (23), Marc Gasol (20) before fouling out with about a minute left in the game and Danny Green left the scoring slump behind as he drained 11 points. Leonard fought off the double team and often the triple team every time he touched the ball.
He was able to execute some nifty passes though which resulted in 5 assists. Kyle Lowry had 7 points to go along with his 9 assists and Fred VanVleet added 15 points.
Toronto out shot the Warriors in every quarter except the 3rd where there was only a 2-point difference. The Warriors Steph Curry who topped all scorers with 34 points also made some history of his own by becoming the first player ever to make 100 three pointers in the NBA Finals. Klay Thompson contributed 29 points and Draymond Green posted a triple double (10pts, 10 rebounds and 10 assists).
But it wasn’t enough to stop a determined Raptors team whose combined defence and offence gave them a win they definitely deserved.
Tonight’s game was the beginning of what should be an interesting series. One thing for sure, all those calling for a sweep can put their brooms away. No reason why Toronto can’t take a 2-0 lead. Just watch the fouls though. GS are notorious free throw shooters and make sure to keep bringing the A-game.
Game 2 is Sunday.
