The TCHC (Toronto Community Housing Corporation) will have a new President and CEO on June 18th.  He’s Eugene Jones and he comes highly qualified but his appointment is controversial because he is an American. He is currently serving as Executive Director of the Detroit Housing Commission, the largest public housing body in the State of Michigan.Jones is credited with the turn around of that agency as well as those in Indianapolis, Kansas City and San Francisco.  He served 10 years in the U.S. Air Force and has lived in several European cities.

His new job will be challenging – TCHC has a $750 million shortfall and the agency is proposing a sell-off of 675 single-family homes to help reduce the short fall. The Corporation has a staff of 1,400, a $550 million budget and 80,000 people on the waiting list.  Jones has said he is not a proponent of selling homes if it means reducing affordable housing but says he needs to examine the proposal. He realizes there may be a backlash because of his American status but he intends to prove himself because he believes he is right for the job and tangible results will be seen quickly
