Andrea Lewis from Degrassy: The next generation attended MWINDAMagazine’s first “I wear African” Red Carpet event on Sunday, June 14 2009 held at the Senhor Rooster Restaurant in Vancouver. Burnaby -New Westminster MP Peter Julian ,Best of BC 2009 artist Lil’Precious, who also performed, designer and stylist Lillian O’Brien (Africouture) and designer Satuana Lumingu(Luminel couture) also appeared on the red carpet.
The event to kick off MWINDA magazine summer issue, in conjonction with celebrating the African fashion, was hosted by Tanya Cromwell and MWINDA magazine editors Messia Ditshimba and Tyson Mutombo.
MWINDA, says, its founders (Messia Ditshimba & Tyson Mutombo), comes at a rigth time. “There are few Canadian magazines that address Afro-Caribbean needs.”
“We named the magazine MWINDA because it means spotlight, exposure in Linguala, a Congolese language. With MWINDA magazine, we celebrate the diversity within the African and Caribbean communities” says Messia Ditshimba.
Guests enjoyed a colourful fashion show presented by AfriCouture and Luminel Couture and dinned on African food like Safron rice and Basa fish. According to the guests, the event was a success.It was also for a good cause: partial proceeds went to Yele Haiti, a foundation started by Grammy-Award winning musician, producer &social entrepreneur Wyclef Jean. Yéle’s projects are conceived to renew hope for Haitians to rebuild their nation.
