By michelle-lee : People of all ages and ethnicities gathered together to honor Nelson Mandela and celebrate his 95th birthday. The event, organized in part by Lloyd McKell, was held in Regent Park at the school named for Mandela. McKell had previously met Mandela three times including for the naming of the school in the Parliament/Shuter Sts. area of Toronto.
July 18th is Nelson Mandela International Day and Mandela’s birthday. The festivities included speeches by South Africa’s high commissioner Membatisi Mdladlana and McKell plus performances by the school’s steel band and classical guitarist Liona Boyd. The singing of Happy Birthday followed a 67 second-long round of applause, which was broadcast around the world.
