About 110 golfers were at Pitt Meadows Golf and Country club
August 25th 2008 to play in a tournament to support FACE- the foundation for African Children’s Education. FACE is a local charity that sponsors children in primary schools in rural Africa that could otherwise not be able to afford going to school.
Speaking at the dinner banquet after the game, Mr George Piprah one of the founders of the Charity , and also the Honorary Consul General for Ghana, remarked it was so heart warming to see Canadians of all backgrounds gather together to support such a worthy cause in Africa. FACE ,he said, made it possible this year for 142 children ages 6 to 12 to go to school . This year ,in march ,he said, a group of volunteers went with Mr & Mrs Piprah to Ghana and visited 6 different villages, in remote areas, and provided essential school supplies like school uniforms, sandals, pens, pencils, exercise books, textbooks and also lunch allowance to the children. In all cases, the group met with the parents (many of them single parents and poor) and personally gave them these school supplies. The students were encouraged to stay in school and as long as they did that, they will be eligible to receive sponsorship next year when FACE returns to Ghana. FACE , he said ,believes that the best way to break the cycle of poverty in Africa for these young children is through education.
At the end of the tournament, the organisers estimated that about $16,000 was raised, 60% more than the amount raised in the inaugural tournament last year. This money, together with individual child sponsor monies will make it possible for over 200 children to be sponsored through the program next year.
