By Garrison Duke : Isaac Asimov once said – “The only constant is change”
Today more than ever this quote rings true! We live in a time of great economic uncertainty; each day brings a new revelations of foreign countries going bankrupt or in need of a bailout, the stock markets collapsing or businesses conducting mass layoffs. In this current economic climate the temptation for many is to play it safe and stick with the old reliable way of life. In tough economic times people tend to stay in work situations that are stagnant and offer no real opportunity to improve their quality of life (they settle).
Let’s face it, at the best of times changing careers or looking for a new job can be a very scary thing. Although playing it safe may make sense for the short term, we should not forget our long term goals and ambitions. We have an obligation to ourselves, family and other important people in our lives to pursue a career choice that can maximize our potential and create opportunities of growth.
So what is one to do?
Well one option is to use this period in time to plan your next move. This is a great time to take inventory of your current skills. Ask yourself do I need more professional development? Should go back to school or undertake part-time studies? Are there any part-time jobs that I can apply for that link to my dream job? Take time to schedule those appointments that you have been delaying for months, use the internet to research career opportunities and trending sectors. Career changes can turn south quickly if they are not well thought-out or researched. Most of all start networking and asking question, talk to friends and associates about the industries they are in, what are the trends? Are their companies expanding?
Laying the ground work for career change during slow periods can greatly enhance your job search when things improve. The option of going back to school can also prove to be a very productive way to ride out a slow economy.
Remember to take time for self-care, all the best!
