The Nigerian Canadian Association of Calgary celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Independence with its 17th Annual Gala Oct. 9th at The Coast Plaza Hotel.
Seven hundred people attended the celebration, including special guest the Honorable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State (Seniors) and all enjoyed the suburb Buffet supplied by the hotel.
During the course of the evening, several of the founding members of the Nigerian Association were honoured and Awards were presented to those who have achieved scholastic excellence.
To celebrate the anniversary, there was a huge cake shaped in the form of the country and emblazoned with the number 50. To add to the festivities, those in the audience who had just celebrated their 50th birthday were included in the Toast to Nigeria.
Prior to the Gala, the Nigerian Association hosted a Taste of Nigeria and Youth Day. The Taste was held at Rosscarrock Community Hall. There was also a video on the culture of Nigeria. The Golden Jubilee Gala was a fitting conclusion to the various celebrations of Nigeria’s 50th year of Independence.
