PASSING | Rebecca Hall’s : Advance Screening
Oct. 29 – Nov. 9
Netflix’s PASSING at VIFF Centre
VIFF year round program, we are pleased to be presenting a series of advance screenings for upcoming Netflix releases. It is a great chance for folks to see these new films on the big screen. The first of the Netflix films in this series is Rebecca Hall’s PASSING.
Adapting Nella Larson’s 1920s novella, actor-turned-director Rebecca Hall has fashioned a crisp, piquant tale about two women friends (Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga), one of whom is married to a white man who doesn’t know her ethnicity. Evocatively photographed in black and white, the movie has a calm, polished veneer topped off by Devonté Hynes’ jazz piano score… Yet this dreamy, literary vibe gradually curdles into something subtly insinuating and suspenseful. There’s a lot going on under the skin.
